Within Proctor and Gamble, there is a famous story about the previous CEO, AG Lafley. Because customers come first, whenever he traveled to a country for business, he would ask to visit a consumer's home and visit a store where P&G's products are sold to better understand the local customer and culture. The message to the rest of the leadership: If our global CEO wasn't too busy to visit and understand our customers, how can you say you are? Employees are also your customers within the enterprise. Are you going to them to better understand as well? People pay attention to what the boss is paying attention to.
If the leaders don't lead, the followers won't follow. What behaviors must senior leadership role model to prompt or increase proactive accountability among the rest of the leadership team? If the leadership team isn't on the same page for the strategic direction and necessary tactical leader behavior, expect silos within silos and multiple subcultures to form.
