"I'm not just Jason, the employee; I'm Jason, the person. If you care, help me with things more than just what I need to do to meet quota."
I overheard this during a breakout discussion for a workshop I recently led. Participants discussed leadership's role in coaching by influencing performance and getting to know the individual employees and their capabilities. Jason was a manager within the client company and shared about a great leader, who had helped him improve as a person, not just in what he could do as an employee, to affect results in an area.
A coach's role is to help their individuals, team, or employees perform to the best of their ability, every time, everywhere. While leadership styles are situational, if leaders are great coaches, that is not a style. It is who they are. Do you know your people? What motivates and demotivates them? Who and what is important to them outside of work? If not, GTKYP - Get To Know Your People. As a leader, you are in the people business. If you don't embrace that, let someone else lead.
"The role of the CEO is to enable people to excel, help them discover their own wisdom, engage themselves entirely in their work, and accept responsibility for making change." — Vineet Nayar
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." — Simon Sine
