Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) can help your organization get to levels of safety excellence not possible without it. It can also help you to have the greatest catastrophe in your history! How can it be so good and so bad? It depends on how you view it and how you pursue it. Have you ever heard someone claim that BBS was the silver bullet, the magic pill for safety excellence? Some organizations have bought into that view and pursued BBS at the expense and neglect of their traditional safety programs. Some have gotten away with that approach (so far), but others have had tragedies.
BBS, if taken as an advanced strategy to supplement traditional safety, can produce stellar results. If it replaces traditional safety, you are addressing one type of accident and neglecting another. The type of accident being neglected may actually have greater severity potential than the ones you are addressing. Don't believe the "silver bullet"" myth. Things that sound too good to be true usually ARE!
