Are you on the safety fad diet?

A lot of organizations are on the safety fad diet. Every month, there’s a new buzzword, a new program, a new app, and a promise of quick wins. And it can feel productive, because you are doing something. Dual panel AI generated comic juxtaposing a cake made haphazardly vs one made on a strong foundation. But quick fixes can undermine real safety excellence, the same way crash diets undermine real health.

Silver bullets are tempting. Drones, dashboards, flashy training tech. And yes, those tools could help. But they cannot replace the basics. It’s like trying to ice a cake that hasn’t been baked yet. It won’t hold together.

Safety excellence is a marathon. It’s built through foundations that are not trendy, just proven:
  • First, engage employees in meaningful safety conversations so safety becomes shared responsibility, not compliance theater.
  • Second, do real root cause and contributory factor analysis so you fix conditions, not symptoms.
  • Third, invest in ongoing training, not one-and-done events.
  • And fourth, leadership commitment. Leaders model, prioritize, and resource safety even when production pressure is loud.

This week, ask: What “quick fix” are we chasing, and which foundation are we avoiding?
